See something wrong? Is your potential host missing? Email Dave & let him know.

There are an abundance of hosting reviews that claim to have found the best WordPress hosting, or top managed WordPress hosting service, etc. While many of these are truthful, and some even quite helpful, I haven’t seen anything that provides a true, unbiased WordPress hosting comparison. So I created one. (jump right to it)

I’ve spent numerous hours researching many of the top WordPress hosts—analyzing pricing tables, scouring documentation, even speaking with some support folks. I have also used some of the hosts listed here, so I pulled a little from personal experience.

This WordPress hosting comparison matrix is designed to help you make the best hosting decision—for you. Some hosts provide 100% managed solutions that deal exclusively with WordPress. Others started with shared hosting, and now offer semi-custom WordPress options. Maybe a CDN is a deal-breaker for you. Or you must have a staging site for every project. The truth is, some of the “best WordPress hosting” just isn’t the best for your particular requirements. (Looking for enterprise hosting?)

I realize support & performance are two important factors in choosing a WordPress host. I have not included support interactions or performance tests on this page. Here’s why: support, performance

Finally, some of the links are affiliate links, and I will receive a commission if you end up making a purchase. Please understand that I am not promoting any single host over another, and they have no say in the order in which they are listed. If this comparison helped you make a decision, using the links on this page are a way for you to say “thanks,” and ensure I can keep it up-to-date with new features & updated pricing.

Managed WordPress Hosting

If you’re looking for truly, 100%, managed WordPress hosting, you should consider Tap, WP Engine, Flywheel & Pagely. They only host WordPress sites; nothing else. Their features & pricing vary greatly, so use the search box to drill down on what’s most important to you, and your budget. ↑ back to table

Shared Hosting

Shared hosting can be loosely defined as sharing resources with other websites hosted on the same server. SiteGround & InMotion both started out hosting all different types of websites, the smaller of which would often use their shared hosting plans. They both promote specific WordPress hosting options, but bare in mind, there might be some remnants of a shared hosting plan, even for their WordPress-specific offerings.

With that said, for small, simple sites on a tight budget, they might be a good option. I’ve heard positive WordPress-related reviews for both, but keep in mind they are larger companies who also support all different types of websites. ↑ back to table

Enterprise WordPress Hosting

Mid-sized companies & larger corporations should probably look towards Pagely, WP Engine & Flywheel for enterprise hosting. Pagely was the first company to focus exclusively on WordPress hosting, and their scalability (at least, on paper) looks impressive. They are known around the community to host some of the larger, higher-trafficked WordPress sites.

WP Engine also markets to enterprise clients, and from what I’ve seen & heard on Twitter, most of them are happy when they switch. WP Engine’s enterprise pricing is custom, as soon as you exceed 25 sites or 400k visits. Pagely offers custom plans as well, but they clearly list their pricing of up to 60 sites & 500GB bandwidth.

Flywheel has some unique features for designers & WordPress agencies who manage multiple sites for their clients, but they also offer custom plans for single sites over 100k visits. As with WP Engine, you’ll need to call their sales team to get an idea of what they can offer, and for what price. ↑ back to table

WordPress Staging Sites

Staging sites are great for development, as well as sites that are constantly changing. Flywheel, WP Engine, Pagely & SiteGround all offer staging sites, but Pagely & SiteGround require an upgrade, or higher plan. Flywheel & WP Engine provide staging on ALL PLANS. ↑ back to table

A Note About CDNs

A CDN is a deal-breaker for me. I believe all sites should use one. Let’s say you agree, and one of the plans above is perfect for you. The only problem is that they charge extra, or make you upgrade, in order to use their CDN. KeyCDN is your answer. Get $10 in free credits »

I currently host with WP Engine, on a plan that includes a CDN for no additional cost. However, I recently switched to KeyCDN, and absolutely love it. A few big reasons why…

  • When I switched the site to https, I needed cdn.wpsmackdown.com to use https as well. With WP Engine (and Flywheel, and probably all of these hosts), I would have needed to purchase an additional SSL certificate to cover the sub-domain. KeyCDN partnered with LetsEncrypt to offer a free SSL for the custom domain of your choice.
  • KeyCDN lets me flush a single file from the cache, whereas WP Engine only has one button that flushes everything.
  • KeyCDN has tons of configuration options for advanced users, but is also incredibly easy to setup with a WordPress plugin (for non-technical users).
  • They offer incredibly low prices. $0.04 USD per GB. Yep. That’s 4 cents per gigabyte. ↑ back to table

WordPress Hosting Support

Support is arguably one of the most important factors in choosing a WordPress host. It’s also very subjective, and can vary greatly from person-to-person. For the same company, I’ve read several rave reviews, as well as several terrible ones. Some companies might provide a different level of support for those on different plans. And some support teams are so big that there’s a large variance in the knowledge of their support staff.

Aside from that, I honestly just have not had the time to accurately & objectively evaluate each host. If I’ve published a full review, I provide support information in there, so please check those out. Until then, I encourage you to contact each potential host & interact with them directly, before you decide on one. (HostingReviews.io has real-person testimonials, but the most recent data is from July 2015.) ↑ back to table

WordPress Hosting Performance

Performance is another key player in finding the best WordPress hosting. However, performance can vary on the same host, depending on which plan you have. It’s also something that is highly dependent on the type of website, and the level of optimization that the site owner employs (optimizing images, minifying/concatenating assets, third-parties to host video, resource-intensive plugins & scripts, etc.).

There are a few good performance tests that have been done on some of these hosts. I encourage you to look for those if performance is paramount for you. I did run one performance analysis of WP Engine vs. GoDaddy’s managed WordPress hosting, but it was quite barebones. There are better ones out there. ↑ back to table
